Merry Christmas!

December 17, 2008

Christmastime, Christmastime!
For girls and boys an itchy time,
a twitchy, anticipitchy time,
a magical, wrappable, gimme time,
of gnawing nails and anxious throes,
and sugary treats and Rudolph’s nose,
of fantasy gifts piled high out of sight,
and watching for Santa late into the night,
of Christmas attacks before the house wakes,
and giggles and shrieks until everything aches,
of playing all day then thinking one thing:
What, oh what,
will next Christmastime bring?

Christmastime, Christmastime!
For moms and dads a hectic time,
a gigantic, extra-breaknecktic time,
a wonderful, impossible, electric time,
of secret lists and kiddies’ pleas,
and snowman lawns and wrestling trees,
of sales clerks you feel like socking,
and heirloom jewels you think of hocking,
of midnight wraps and heartfelt hugs,
and red-eyed rising to sunrise tugs,
of joy and warmth and hearts that sing:
What, oh what,
will next Christmastime bring?

Christmastime, Christmastime!
For friends and kin a meeting time,
a touching and togethering time,
a kissable, eatable, fattable time,
of distant relations (what are their names?),
and mistletoe pecks and Monopoly games,
of where were you then and how have you been,
and thanks for the fob and thanks for the fin,
of snoozing and boozing and seconds of pie,
and knowing you’re loved with a thankful sigh,
of seeing in everyone time on the wing:
What, oh what,
will next Christmastime bring?
